One Trick to Organize Your Content Pages in GA4


Hello Reader,

It's been a few weeks since my last email. But today I want to talk about a super useful feature that you can use in GA4.

Now, let's say you have 86 different content pages. It's kinda hard to get insights by looking at them separately. Wouldn't it be nice if you could look at them by topic or by author?


That's where GA4 content grouping comes in!

What are Content Groups?

Think of them as folders for your website pages.
Instead of GA4 showing you every single URL, you can group them into categories like:

  • Blog posts
  • Product pages
  • Landing pages
  • Checkout flow

When you pull reports, you don’t have a thousand different URLs. Instead, you see neat groups that actually make sense.

How to add it to your GA4?

You might be thinking...

"Okay, sounds great Robert, but how can I add this to my GA4?

The good news is that it's easy to do. The bad news is that you need to use Google Tag Manager.

There are essentially two ways depending on your URL structure:

  • Based on URLs you group everything in GTM (e.g. /blog or /product).
  • If your URLs are not distinct enough, you need to ask your developer to add "content_group" to the datalayer in the code.

    This way, when you send the page views to GA4, you can add a parameter content_group, which will be picked by GA4.

Don’t overcomplicate it. Start with 3–5 groups (Blog, Product, Lister, Checkout). You can always add more later.
